Mirror of Time

On Going

In the infinity of the desert, an island of greenery, a haven of peace. The Oasis of Tighmert, in Guelmim, in southern Morocco, is a fragile ecosystem facing the challenges of climate change, threatened by unreasonable exploitation, fires, drought and migration.

In 2019, Greenpeace warns against the destruction of Moroccan oases. Once sanctuaries of abundance, these ancient jewels are transformed before our eyes. The aqueous resources, once generous, dissipate under the scorch of the sun, thus impoverishing the agricultural and pastoral roots of these fertile lands. A drought that hit the oasis every five years is now returning every two years, and the pace is accelerating. It is aggravated by the fires that ravage the palm grove, depriving the community of an important source of income and leaving them tired of fighting the elements. The people of Tighmert seek to escape this vicious circle, abandoning their ancestral homes in the face of the inexorable tide of climate change. Tighmert, like other oasis of green Edens, fades sadly under the helpless gaze of time, in media indifference and general ignorance. Photographic exhibition “Mirror of Time”

The photographic exhibition “Mirror of Time” weaves a delicate fabric to reveal Tighmert’s multifaceted concerns. We want to raise awareness, launch a vibrant appeal to captivate the attention of public opinion, policy makers, and the entities involved. It is a fervent quest, a demand for the safeguarding of the ancestral intangible heritage that dances according to the nomadic wind in Morocco, a desire to preserve the oasian ecosystem, fragile jewel of our planet.

For two years, Ghassane Kaaibich has been documenting life in oases, the spaces and the resilient communities that inhabit them, confronted with the formidable forces of climate change. This approach aims to unveil the mysteries of these shrines, through the stories of the inhabitants and their adaptation strategies. The photographic exhibition “Mirror of Time” bears witness to this quest.
